5/30/2023 0 Comments The five by robert mccammon![]() You had your own high standards and, by those, you were rarely any good. Yet most of the time, you were just average. How you threw the perfect pitch when it was needed or played the best guitar solo since the days of Jimi Hendrix. In your head, you can remember so clearly when, against the odds, you triumphed. Whether you’re young or old, it’s strange when you look back at your life. Let’s approach the answer to this question from a slightly obscure direction. When you want to push forward, it pushes back. It can be playing music, or making deals as a manager, or remembering what it was like when you could hold a rifle and put a bullet through a man’s head at 500 or more yards. They all want to succeed at what they’re good at. The Five ( Subterranean Press, 2011) is a book about people who are professionals. For the less lucky, there’s the constant grind of having to do our best when not enough people around us care what happens to us. That helps us through this vale of tears without too much pain. ![]() ![]() If we’re lucky, we’re reasonably happy with who we are. ![]() ![]() ![]() There is no getting away from the music of the spheres. ![]() But the monochord returned for the anthology’s 1997 CD reissue. In the 1960s the mystical gave way to social realism: Folkways replaced the de Bry drawing with a photograph of a Depression farmer. The instrument is a representation of musica universalis, the music of the spheres, the harmonies of heavenly bodies in motion. Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music (Folkways, 1952) was first issued with extraordinary cover art: a Theodor de Bry drawing of a celestial monochord, a one-stringed instrument, tuned by a hand emerging from a cloud. ![]() Mother’s Last Word to Her Son : Take Your Burden to the Lord and Leave It There : Paul and Silas in Jail : Lift Him Up That’s All : Denomination Blues - Part 1 : Denomination Blues - Part 2 : I Am Born to Preach the Gospel : Train Your Child : Jesus Is My Friend : What Are They Doing in Heaven Today : A Mother’s Last Word to Her Daughter : I’ve Got the Keys to the Kingdom : You Can’t Stop a Tattler - Part 1 : You Can’t Stop a Tattler - Part 2 : I Had a Good Father and Mother : The Church Needs Good Deacons Washington Phillips and His Manzarene Dreams. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Vampire hunter d raiser of gales![]() Rape isn’t some sort of vague threat D protects the main female lead from like the first novel. These people come across as utterly horrible individuals that were not worth being saved. The people of Tepes do not come across as more or less good but frightened people with one or two bad apples like the townspeople from the previous book. I don’t think this book is for everyone, and the reason did knock the rating down quite a bit. ![]() The task sounds straightforward enough, but this is a story filled with twists and turns that kept me guessing right to the end. Someone’s been bitten and the townsfolk can’t destroy that monster that did it. After years of quiet, activity has started up again. A mysterious mountain with the probably abandoned ruins of a vampire noble’s manor lay close to town. In Vampire Hunter D Vol 2: Raiser of Gales, D finds himself in the small town of Tepes. But, maybe, not as much as I enjoyed the first. It’s a fascinating world, and I enjoyed reading the second volume in this classic series. ![]() It’s a place filled with vampires, monsters, and humans who will do anything to survive. The world of Vampire Hunter D is an intriguing one, an apocalyptic world where tech and the arcane mingle. Why have even modest attempts to address climate change been defeated again and again? Why do hedge-fund billionaires pay a far lower tax rate than middle-class workers? The fact that they are all extremely wealthy is by no means a coincidence and adds to the vital social and political implications of the book. Quaint little habits, distinct accents, gross flaws, and most unusual looks identify each of those assembled as the representative of his specific profession or corner of the continent. ![]() When Joachim introduces his cousin to several patients at their first breakfast together, the array of characters they meet affords them a glimpse of all the misery and falseness that they will live with throughout their stay. The peculiar impressions Hans Castorp collects characterize the atmosphere of physical and moral decay prevailing at the sanatorium. Second, the chapter opens the discussion on the nature of time, the novel's other major theme. ![]() This chapter serves two main functions: that of introducing Hans Castorp to real life at the Berghof and its director, Hofrat Behrens, as well as to the two characters who will vie for his attention from now on - Settembrini and Clavdia Chauchat. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Toffle moomin![]() ![]() Joining Drawn & Quarterly's archival series of Moomin The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip, Moomin, Mymble & Little My, and the Moomintroll chapter books is the glorious reprinting of the Tove Jansson classic children's book Who Will Comfort Toffle? with a loving translation by British poet Sophie Hannah.
